Despite the popularity of markup languages and the possibility of encoding mathematical expressions and also the maturity of text retrieval systems, the problem of mathematics retrieval has not been addressed effectively. The Mathematics Retrieval project was established at the University of Waterloo with the objective of developing a system for retrieving mathematical information on the web.
